How to prepare your child for starting childcare or kindergarten

Starting childcare or kindergarten is a big milestone for both children and families. Whether your little one is joining a nursery, toddler program, or funded kindergarten in Oak Park. Some gentle preparation can help ease the transition and set them up for a happy, confident start.

Talk positively about childcare or kindergarten

Children pick up on your tone and attitude. Speak about childcare in a positive, reassuring way. Share what they can look forward to – like playing with friends, trying new activities, and meeting caring educators.

Visit the centre together before their first day

If possible, arrange a tour of your chosen childcare centre. Before your child starts, ensure you complete orientations before your child’s first official day. We reccomend anywhere between 2 - 5 orientations before beginning. This allows for time where parents can spend time with their children in their classroom and as well as allowing children to spend time with their educators without parents being around. Spending time with educators (and no parents) is extremely important as it allows the child to bond with and connect with educators which will help them to feel more familiar and secure when the big day arrives.

Practice daily routines at home

Building simple routines at home can help your child feel more comfortable when they start care. Practice saying goodbye, washing hands, or packing a small backpack together. Familiar routines that are constantly practiced build confidence in your child. They are likely to adapt more easily as they know what to expect next.

Encourage independence with small tasks

Help your child feel capable and confident by encouraging independence in small ways. Tasks like handwashing, packing away toys, or feeding themselves all help prepare them for childcare routines.

Expect mixed emotions – and that’s okay

It’s normal for children (and parents!) to feel a mix of excitement and nerves before starting childcare or kindergarten. Reassure your child that their feelings are normal, that educators are there to help them settle in and that mum/dad will be back soon.

Stay consistent with drop-off routines and trust your child’s educators

Once childcare begins, keep your drop-off routine simple and consistent. For eg - pop your child’s backpack in the locker, read one book together in the book corner, give them a big hug, a cheerful and happy goodbye and let them know that you will be back soon. Familiar routines that are constantly practiced build confidence in your child. They are likely to adapt more easily as they know what to expect next. Trust in your child’s educators, this will make you and your child feel more safe and secure.
